How To Take Care Of Dry Skin In Winter From The Inside And Outside

How To Take Care Of Dry Skin In Winter From The Inside And Outside

Winter may be a picturesque season, with the snow creating a winter wonderland that makes for quite a gorgeous and magical sight, but apart from its perks, it can take a toll on your skin and leave it dry, dull and frustratingly itchy.

You may head to your drugstore for a quick fix, only to be confronted with hundreds of products that can leave you scratching your head in confusion.

Apart from not knowing where to start, once you do pick out a product, you may be dismayed to skim the label and realize that the product is brimming in synthetic chemicals that can put your health at risk. Apart from the health risks, these products provide no real long-term skin benefits due to the lack of real, nutrient-rich ingredients.

Using the right products is just one step in the fight against dry skin in winter. Keep reading for two tips to keep your skin hydrated, glowing and touchingly soft all season long!

Hydrate from the inside out

Plump, hydrated skin starts on the inside, and water is your best defense against the drying effects of this chilly season. Water helps to hydrate and nourish the skin cells from the inside out for plumper, smoother skin that glows with radiance.

You may be more tempted to sip on sugary lattes when the temperatures dip below zero, but it may surprise you to learn that sugar actually draws water out of your cells and will leave your skin dehydrated, dull, and in serious need of a hydration boost!

It may be hard to sip on water when your body craves something a little warmer. so why not switch out your sugary drinks for delicious herbal teas instead?

Here’s a few recipes that will benefit your health and your skin, and they are guaranteed to warm your chilly bones!

Use real, natural products

We all want to enjoy hydrated and dewy skin when our skin is dry and flaky, but you may find that hydrating products usually fall into two categories; the first group of products are usually heavy and leave a greasy film on the skin, which is not ideal. The second group of products are usually too lightweight and absorb quickly, but your skin may still feel dry to the touch.

When you make the switch to all natural products filled with real, nutrient-rich ingredients, then this no longer becomes a problem.

Our Ultra Ultra Hydrating Facial Cream is luxuriously rich, yet will leave no greasy feel on your skin, just a perfect balance of dewy hydration for soft, smooth and glowing skin.

Organic Aloe, coconut and jojoba oils provide much-needed soothing hydration for skin that may be sensitive and stressed, while organic neem seed oil provides nourishment to dehydrated skin, and white willow bark provides gentle exfoliating properties to smooth dull, rough skin. It doesn’t end there! DMAE & MSM provide potent anti-aging benefits help smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and soften skin.

These two tips ensure your skin is hydrated internally and externally so you can enjoy dewy soft and glowing skin whether indoors or outdoors!

3 Step Natural Skincare Routine for Rejuvenating Skin After Holiday Stress

3 Step Natural Skincare Routine for Rejuvenating Skin After Holiday Stress

I’d like to wish all our readers a Happy New Year and hope your holiday was one of rest and relaxation, good food and even better company!

After a few weeks of putting your feet up, indulging in the good stuff (we aren’t judging!) and taking a break from work, getting back into the swing of things can be a bit of a challenge. The same is true about your skin.

You may already follow a strict natural skincare routine, but it may have fallen by the wayside a bit over the holidays. Late nights, travel, rich food and alcohol all take their toll on your skin, and while you may be feeling rested internally, externally your skin may be looking a little dull.

Don’t let less than glowing skin dull your shine though! By following these simple skin care tips, you’ll quite literally slough away the effects of the holiday season on your skin to reveal dewy soft, vibrant and youthful skin quicker than you can say Happy New Year!

Get Scrubbing

The first step in your quest to achieve that glowing skin we all lust after is to exfoliate. A good exfoliation will help to slough off dead skin cells that may be contributing to a dull complexion, dry skin and clogged pores. You may find that all your skin care woes simply melt away after this important step!

After the holidays, your skin deserves some extra TLC so we are going to recommend our luxurious Lemon Tart Exfoliating Mask for a real skin treat. Jojoba beads help to dissolve impurities while still maintaining your skin’s delicate moisture balance while antioxidant vitamins A, C and E fight off free radicals and visibly brighten and even skin tone and texture. So set aside 15 minutes, treat yourself to a glass of red or a good book, and relax while this mask works its magic!

Spritz Me Up

Before you dive into applying your various lotions and potions, the next step in your routine is going to be a spritz of toner. Many people underestimate the power of a good toner, but a toner helps to soothe and nourish the skin, balance pH levels and allow for better absorption of products you apply after. Our Rose Hydrating Toner/Mist will instantly help to uplift your spirits and calm your mind thanks to its gorgeous subtle scent of Bulgarian rose.

Lock In Your Serum

Now your skin is perfectly prepped and primed for your serum and lotion. We’ll keep the bright theme going here by recommending our Vitamin C Brightening Serum. You can’t go wrong with Vitamin C, and everyone can benefit from its potent antioxidant properties. Vitamin C can help brighten and even skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for glowing, plump and clear skin!

Next, be sure to lock in your serum with a versatile moisturizer that is luxuriously creamy yet lightweight and ideal for everyday use for dry, sensitive, and mature skin types. Our Ultra Hydrating Facial Cream will get the job done thanks to soothing and hydrating ingredients such as aloe, coconut and jojoba, while anti-aging powerhouses DMAE and MSM help fight the signs of aging and leave your skin silky soft to the touch.

Click here to start your year with vibrant, glowing skin no matter how dull and gloomy the weather may get!

Boost Your Skin's Hydration with this Simple Fix

Boost Your Skin's Hydration with this Simple Fix

Winter weather can wreak havoc on our skin.  Dry, cold air, indoor rooms with the heat cranked up can suck the life out of our skin.  It seems as though we go from soft and dewy to dehydrated and lackluster in a matter of minutes.  What to do?

Our Rose Hydrating Toner/Mist is a blissful spritz away from replenishing dry or dehydrated skin.  Alcohol-free, infused with luxurious organic Bulgarian rose water and essential oil, it calms and soothes sensitive, stressed skin.

Essential minerals revitalize the skin, glycerin draws water to the skin, providing much-needed hydration, and organic sunflower seed oil softens and smooths.

The true-to-nature subtle rose fragrance is nirvana, calming and invigorating the overstimulated body and soul.  All that in one little spritz!

How to use:  Apply toner after cleansing to help balance skin’s pH and remove any remaining impurities.  Damp skin also allows serum and/or moisturizer to deliver maximum benefits to the skin. After applying makeup, spritz to help set makeup and get a fresh-faced look as well.

And then there’s the rest of the day.  I don’t leave home without my toner.  I carry the 1 oz mini in my purse.  I admit I’m toner-obsessed, but nothing refreshes, softens, and brings  to life my skin like this Hydrating Rose Toner.

And the fragrance is heaven-sent.  It's as though I’ve walked by my neighbor’s rose bushes and have literally “stopped to smell the roses.”  For me, it is so soothing and brings me back to nature, even if for a few seconds.  I spritz every night before bed to quiet down the day.

So this winter, or any time your skin is just feeling dry, tired, or blah, our Rose Hydrating Toner/Mist may be just what you’re looking for.  Click here to find your bliss.

(A special thanks to Jen Mathews for spotlighting our Rose Toner on her My Beauty Bunny blog, an award-winning, top 10 cruelty-free beauty, lifestyle and fashion blog.  You’ll find everything you need to learn more about going cruelty-free and where to shop for products that are not tested on animals.  Every small step makes a difference!)

Winter weather can definitely leave our skin feeling dry, flaky and ultra sensitive.  Oftentimes even products for "extra dry skin" barely make a noticeable difference in hydration.  Heavier creams sometimes do little more than leave a greasy feel to our skin.

So let's look at the concept of layering our skin care like we do with our clothing.  That heavy jacket is nice and warm, but you still need a layer of clothing underneath to get maximum benefit.

What to do?  Serums are really the workhorse in our skin care regimen.  They provide concentrated actives (vitamins, anti-oxidants, peptides, and moisturizing agents) typically in a much higher percentage than moisturizers alone.  The role of moisturizers is to form a protective barrier on the skin, keep moisture in, while serums are really the first line of defense in getting nutrients to your skin, and they are lighter weight and absorb more easily.  They are best applied after toner to bare skin and before your moisturizer.

Just because winter is here, it doesn't mean you need a complete re-do of your skin care routine.  Our Peptide Complex Serum is an effortless solution to your winter-wonderland woes.

Key Ingredients:

Dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline (sometimes described as a natural alternative to Botox)

Seaweed extract (loaded with vitamins and minerals)

Hyaluronic acid (which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water)

Matsutake (songyi mushroom) and oligopeptides (anti-aging powerhouses)

This velvety rich serum is packed full of anti-aging, skin-loving ingredients.  It helps fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brightens and evens skin tone, nourishes and hydrates even the driest skin, and layers beautifully under our silky lightweight facial creams.  It's a lot to ask of one skin care product, but our Peptide Complex Serum is up to the task.

So let's keep it simple.  Say good-bye to dull, sluggish winter-time skin and get your glow on with radiantly soft, smooth and vibrant-looking skin.

Let the goodness begin.  Click here for fresh-faced, rejuvenated skin.

In this day and age it’s hard to believe that animal testing for cosmetic purposes is permitted in the United States.

Laurmé Skin Care has joined with 200 other companies (and growing) in supporting The Humane Cosmetics Act, which prohibits the manufacture and sale of animal-tested cosmetics in the United States.  The Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 2790) is sponsored by U.S. Reps. Martha McSally (R-AZ), Don Beyer (D-VA), Ed Royce (R-CA), Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) and Paul D. Tonko (D-NY).

I have been an avid animal lover my entire life.  From my earliest memories as a child, my dogs were the world to me.  I am a past volunteer at my local no-kill shelter, and I’m proud to have been owned by many rescue dogs and cats.  In my ideal world I am always surrounded by barking, purring, sweet furry hugs and kisses, and a houseful of pet hair!

From the very beginning, it was critical to me that Laurmé Skin Care receive third-party certification as a cruelty-free company.  To me Leaping Bunny certification was the gold standard. Leaping Bunny Certified products have not been tested on animals at any point in the creation process – not the finished products and not the ingredients that go into the finished products.

Does your favorite cosmetic brand sell products in China?  In 2014 China passed legislation to limit animal testing, but this applies to “ordinary cosmetics produced and sold in China.” If cosmetics are being imported to China, there is no legislation banning animal testing.  In addition, products manufactured and sold in China are still subject to China’s post-market surveillance testing. Cosmetics that are already on sale are chosen at random for extra testing.

According to an excerpt from a Humane Society International press release in June 2014, Peter Li, PhD, HSI’s China policy adviser, states: “We know that many cruelty-free companies will be keen to sell in China, but they need to be cautious. China will almost certainly increase its post-market surveillance testing, so I’m afraid for the time being it is impossible for a cruelty-free company to manufacture and sell in China without the risk that its products will be dripped in a rabbit’s eyes or forced down a mouse’s throat.

This still holds true today! We have the modern scientific knowledge, and we most certainly should have the compassion, to stop this inhumane treatment of animals, and we can help do this with our wallets.  Most of the top cosmetic brands still employ testing on animals despite it being well documented that these tests are notoriously unreliable.

If you’d like to show your support to end this cruel and barbaric practice, you can take action here.

About the Leaping Bunny Program: The Leaping Bunny Program, founded in 1996, is administered by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). CCIC is comprised of the following animal protection organizations: American Anti-Vivisection Society; Animal Alliance of Canada; Beauty Without Cruelty, USA; Doris Day Animal League; The Humane Society of Canada; The Humane Society of the United States; National Anti-Vivisection Society; and New England Anti-Vivisection Society.

We are proud to be Leaping Bunny Certified, and you can rest assured and be confident knowing all of our products are cruelty-free – and an effortless click away!!

The number one cause of wrinkles and premature aging of our skin is the sun.  Of course, our lifestyle choices, stress, what we eat, our level of exercise, sleep, etc. all play a role, but there is nothing “healthy” about that dark, bronze tan (unless it’s from a self-tanner J )

I wrote a blog post about the difference in UVA (aging) rays and UVB (burning) rays and their damaging effects on our skin year round.  Click here for some eye-opening revelations about UV rays and why sunscreen is a must!

We hear a lot about free radical damage, oxidation, and the aging effects on our skin.  I think of it this way.  What happens to a bicycle left outside; your beautiful bedroom dresser?  Visible signs of oxidation/rust and degradation appear very rapidly.  It’s no different for our skin – except that a lot of the damage isn’t visibly noticeable at first.

We’ve all heard the terms “free radicals.”  But what is it?  Without going into an entire chemistry lesson, everything in the world is made up of atoms.  Atoms are content as long as they are stable, but external and environmental stressors such as sun exposure, pollution, smoking, stress, poor eating, lack of sleep, alcohol/drugs, etc. cause the atoms to become unstable, and they go in search of other atoms to help stabilize them.  These unstable atoms are free radicals.

Oxidation is when parts of cells are damaged by free radicals.  Free radical and oxidative damage shows up in our skin as loss of elasticity, brown spots, wrinkles, and generally dull, sluggish-looking skin.

But there’s help!  Vitamin C, a formidable anti-oxidant, helps fight free radicals and offers a multitude of anti-aging benefits.  Properly formulated, it helps shield the skin from environmental stressors like sunlight, smoking, and pollution.  It replenishes and rejuvenates skin.  It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduces the appearance of age spots, brightens and evens skin tone, and helps give your skin that radiant youthful-looking glow.

Want to get your glow on?  Try our Vitamin C Brightening Serum or our Intense Rejuvenating Serum for more sensitive skin and experience for yourself the summer joy of soft, supple-looking skin.

Summer and the Dreaded Breakouts

Summer and the Dreaded Breakouts

Summer is here, and although I’m a cool-weather gal myself, I know a lot of people really thrive in the warm weather and love being outdoors.

Welcome to heat- and sweat-induced acne breakouts.  As the mercury rises, our skin produces more oil.  While our faces may have a healthy “glow,” bacteria and dirt, loving an oily environment, stick to our sweaty skin and clog our pores. Sunscreen, a must for all times of the year, combined with oil and sweat, also contributes to clogging our pores.  A perfect environment for acne is born.

  • Well, obviously, keep your skin clean. If you work out, cleanse your face and remove makeup ahead of time if you can.  I know it’s not always possible, so second best is to remove the sweat and dirt as soon as you can afterwards.
  • Mineral makeup is typically oil-free and is good for oily skin, reducing clogged pores.
  • Be Gentle to Your Skin. Many acne-fighting ingredients simply dry out your skin and damage the skin’s protective barrier (actually causing you to produce more oil to compensate for it).
  • Don’t just think of combating the acne as it appears, look to certain ingredients to protect your skin’s barrier, fight inflammation and free radicals and nourish and hydrate your skin, making it less susceptible to inflammation and damage in the first place.

Use a gentle cleanser like our 2-in-1 Gentle Cleansing Milk.  Your skin should never feel taut or squeaky clean.  If so, you are stripping the skin of its natural oils and damaging the skin’s protective barrier. Our cleanser contains organic Bulgarian Rose Water to hydrate and soothe inflamed, sensitive skin and lavender and chamomile essential oils to help calm and fight blemishes.

Use a toner.  It balances your skin’s pH, helps remove any residual dirt or bacteria on your skin after cleansing, and it prepares your skin to receive maximum benefit from your serum and/or moisturizer.  Plus a cooling spritz throughout the day makes for a rejuvenating pick-me-up for you and your skin.

Our Rose Hydrating Toner/Mist is alcohol-free and contains organic Bulgarian Rose Water and Essential Oil to hydrate and soothe inflamed, sensitive skin.  Phospholipids and hydrolyzed oat protein soothe and nourish skin.  Rhodiola (roseroot) extract contains plant stem cells that fight free radicals, and Moringa seed extract contains skin-purifying properties and antioxidants that fight free radicals.  All that before you even put any moisturizer on your face!

Choose products that contain salix alba (white willow bark) or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs).  Both act as natural exfoliants, clearing pores, and making way for fresh new cells and soft, smooth plump-looking skin.  For more sensitive skin, you can find white willow bark in our Ultra Hydrating Facial Cream and AHA’s in, yep, our AHA Renewing Facial Cream.

Look for anti-oxidants.  Inflammation sets the whole acne process into motion.  Topical anti-oxidants, particularly Vitamins A, C, and E, can help stop sebum oxidation (the initial phase of forming acne).

Our Intense Rejuvenating Serum for sensitive skin and our anti-aging Vitamin C Brightening Serum are loaded with Vitamins A, C, and E for that added boost in fighting inflammation, brightening skin tone and texture, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.  Anti-oxidants are just good for your skin, acne or not.

Consider a Retinoid.  Our Resurfacing Night Cream contains 2.5% retinol.  Retinol has been scientifically proven to boost collagen production from beneath the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.  It is ideal for acne-prone skin because it removes dead skin cells from the surface that clog pores.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate.  Once or twice a week apply a gentle exfoliating facial mask (not a scrub) like our Lemon Tart Exfoliating Mask.  Jojoba beads gently slough off dead skin cells, maximizing your skin’s ability to absorb other nutrient-rich ingredients.  It is loaded with antioxidants that help brighten and even skin tone.  Cypress essential oil has antiseptic and astringent properties that awaken dull complexions and has an overall toning effect on the skin.

So don't give up hope that you must suffer through acne.  A few preventative measures and attention to what you're putting on your skin can go a long way in reducing acne breakouts.

Why Exercise is Good for Your Skin

Why Exercise is Good for Your Skin

The benefits of exercise are well known.  It causes blood flow to increase, and our hearts, lungs, brains, muscles, and cardiovascular systems benefit. Toxins are flushed from our body, which helps unclog pores, and blood carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout the body help nourish our skin cells.  But what does that really mean to healthy-looking skin?

It’s no secret our skin changes as we age.  Visibly we see fine lines and crow’s feet.  The outer layer of our skin, made up mostly of dead skin cells and some collagen, begins to thicken.  Our skin becomes drier and flakier.

The layer of skin right below the epidermis begins to thin, resulting in a loss of elasticity and sagging skin.

It appears researchers are now discovering that in those after age 40 who engage in moderate exercise (three hours a week), there appears to be a marked difference in the skin structure.  The outer layer of skin is thinner and healthier and the underlying dermis layers are thicker.

An article published in the NY Times, Younger Skin Through Exercise, reports researchers’ findings that study participants’ skin “was closer in composition to that of 20- and 30-year-olds than to that of others their age, even if they were past 65.”

That's pretty exciting and very encouraging news! And it's yet another reason to get out, smell the roses, take charge, and get our bodies moving!

Just a reminder, if you opt for outdoor exercise, don’t forget to wear sunscreen!  Also, our Vitamin C Brightening Serum is ideally suited for environmentally stressed skinl!

Seasonal Skin Care Made Simple

Seasonal Skin Care Made Simple

You don't need a complete overhaul of your skin care routine for each season. We know the weather, environment, and our lifestyle affect our skin, but that's no reason to buy into the beauty industry’s hype about more is better and every season calls for a complete revamping of our skin care routine.

Laurmé Skin Care offers low-maintenance, high-performance skin care that delivers uncompromising results – effortlessly.  Our products are specially formulated to offer multiple benefits - no complicated skin care routines, no dizzying product categories.

Here are some ways our facial products pull double duty.

Our 2-in-1 Gentle Cleansing Milk -  Gentle, yet powerful, it cleans dirt and debris off your face, yet doesn't strip all the oils from your skin.  Whether it's winter or summer, this cleanser does the job.  And it's gentle enough to remove eye make-up as well!

Our Rose Hydrating Toner/Mist has seemingly endless uses.  It can be used after cleansing to prepare skin for moisturization, a quick spritz during the day to rehydrate and refresh, spritz to set makeup, spritz to calm an overstimulated mind.  This is one product I never leave home without - rain or shine! You can read more about our Bulgarian Rose Essential Oil and Water and its many benefits on a previous blog post.

Our Ultra Hydrating Facial Cream is gentle enough to be used as an eye cream – and works day or night.

Our Vitamin C Brightening Serum can be used instead of a face cream, works great in place of an eye cream, and blends seamlessly with makeup.

In fact, all of our serums can work as stand-alone moisturizers.  Maybe you're in a humid environment or your skin just feels adequately hydrated.  Skip the face cream and just use a serum.  That ensures you get the benefits of vitamins and anti-oxidants for your skin without adding additional moisturization.

Switching out which serum you use is often all you need to address your skin's needs on any given day.  You can read my Effortless Guide to Serum Comparison blog post for a quick-and-easy way to identify which serum is best suited for your skin's needs.

The point is you don’t need 4 cleansers, 5 toners, 10 face creams, and 10 serums to get the best care possible for your skin.

If you’re not sure which products to choose without breaking the bank or how they might feel on your skin, our Travel/Gift sets are an ideal way to experiment, plus the minis are great for carrying in your purse or throwing in your overnight bag!
