The number one cause of wrinkles and premature aging of our skin is the sun. Of course, our lifestyle choices, stress, what we eat, our level of exercise, sleep, etc. all play a role, but there is nothing “healthy” about that dark, bronze tan (unless it’s from a self-tanner J )
I wrote a blog post about the difference in UVA (aging) rays and UVB (burning) rays and their damaging effects on our skin year round. Click here for some eye-opening revelations about UV rays and why sunscreen is a must!
WHY ANTI-OXIDANTS ARE IMPORTANT IN SKIN CARE
We hear a lot about free radical damage, oxidation, and the aging effects on our skin. I think of it this way. What happens to a bicycle left outside; your beautiful bedroom dresser? Visible signs of oxidation/rust and degradation appear very rapidly. It’s no different for our skin – except that a lot of the damage isn’t visibly noticeable at first.
We’ve all heard the terms “free radicals.” But what is it? Without going into an entire chemistry lesson, everything in the world is made up of atoms. Atoms are content as long as they are stable, but external and environmental stressors such as sun exposure, pollution, smoking, stress, poor eating, lack of sleep, alcohol/drugs, etc. cause the atoms to become unstable, and they go in search of other atoms to help stabilize them. These unstable atoms are free radicals.
Oxidation is when parts of cells are damaged by free radicals. Free radical and oxidative damage shows up in our skin as loss of elasticity, brown spots, wrinkles, and generally dull, sluggish-looking skin.
But there’s help! Vitamin C, a formidable anti-oxidant, helps fight free radicals and offers a multitude of anti-aging benefits. Properly formulated, it helps shield the skin from environmental stressors like sunlight, smoking, and pollution. It replenishes and rejuvenates skin. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduces the appearance of age spots, brightens and evens skin tone, and helps give your skin that radiant youthful-looking glow.
